In 1934, Architectural Digest featured a home designed by Cliff May, a man with no architectural training and little building experience. It was the second home he had ever designed and built, and was called the “Lindstrom House”. Cliff May passed away 55 years later, but not without first designing over a thousand custom homes and leaving an incredible legacy – the California ranch house.

You now have the chance to stay in one of these magnificent homes designed by May, founder of the Ranch House Supply Corporation. The interior features an incredible amount of period-correct furnishings, and May’s signature indoor-outdoor living features are spread throughout the home. The word “luxurious” could easily be used to describe the oasis that is this secluded getaway.

This Laurel Canyon ranch Is listed on Airbnb as ideal for five guests with its three bedrooms and four baths. Its close proximity to Hollywood, West Hollywood, and Studio City mean ample dining opportunities and city experiences.

Why people love it:
Great outdoor space · Better than the pictures · A quick drive to everything · Beyond comfortable

Featuring incredible outdoor space, this ranch house is a gorgeous example of what can be accomplished with one level. The interior certainly has an eclectic style, but does feel like a controlled chaos. Floor-to-ceiling windows on many of the walls provide unsullied views of the pond and farm nearby.

With three bedrooms and two and a half baths, this midcentury home ideally hosts eight guests. If you happen to be a musician, there is also a detached professional recording studio which can be rented for an additional fee. The home is located close to Ventura Blvd and the owner recommends the beaches, desert, and Ojai and Santa Barbara.

Another home located in the Alexander tract of Palm Springs, this authentic mid-century abode features William Krisel’s butterfly-roof design. A feature that has become inextricable from mid-century modern design in the minds of many, it’s hard to believe the subtly angled roof came from a man who proclaimed he didn’t believe in style.

Being an Alexander, the excellent layout of this home is almost expected. The wood-beamed ceiling is a lovely feature, and light abounds throughout the entire space. Updates were made to suit modern desires and little period-inspired furniture remains, but overall it’s retained a lot of relaxed charm. A large outdoor area offers ample room for enjoying the sun and a pool to cool off in.

Advertised for seven guests, its three bedrooms and two baths would be great for a large family or couples retreat. Get out and explore Palm Springs. The Rat Pack hangout Riviera Resort & Spa is just minutes away and tons of excellent food and entertainment is just as close.

Why people love it:
Lovely backyard and pool area · Great amenities · Great host, location, and home

Clyde Hufbauer began his architectural career in the late 1930’s and went on to become chief architect in the San Diego Unified School District as chief architect. A population that nearly quadrupled, swelling to over a million, provided the architect with the opportunity to design over 75 schools. This house in La Jolla was the second home designed and built by Hufbauer and was where he and his family resided between 1952-1960.

The interior is almost completely lined in varying woods. The rooms would likely feel closed in if not for the brilliant California sun that shines in through skylights, glass doors, and floor-to-ceiling windows that tastefully line the exterior walls. It seems Hufbauer opted for a more closed-off layout in comparison to the open-plan designs that were popularized during this period, but it simply feels cozy. The house accommodates 12 guests, having five bedrooms and three baths.

The exterior of this home is truly amazing, resting on a 29,000 square foot plot of land less than a half-mile from the beach and nearby village. Lush foliage surrounds the stone steps that lead up to a detached deck that offers panoramic ocean views. A huge gravel entranceway creates a great buffer between the house and the road. You can tell great care has been taken in preserving this historical landmark.

Why people love it:
A perfect house in a perfect location · Mid-century modern glam meets nature oasis · A great house for families · Beautiful views and great value

I think this mid-century house represents a cool, and possibly unrepresented part of Airbnb these days: rentals that feel like home. Delightfully perched on a hillside, it feels like someone’s grandmother once lived in this home, and it’s been tastefully and lightly renovated to suit a younger generation. The kitchen and bathroom retain so much mid-century charm, but don’t feel dated. It feels so livable.

Lots of sunlight gets let in through the wrap-around windows in the living room, but the house remains more private than other homes in this list that seem to “bare all” to the world. The deck is another nice private spot. This rental is part of a side-by-side duplex built in 1955, and is suitable for two guests with its one bed and bath. It’s a walkable distance to Lake Merrit, shops and restaurants.

Why people love it:
Very clean, fashionably furnished · Centrally located in a real neighborhood · Great location, great place, wonderful time · SPOTLESS

If gorgeous mountain views and vintage modern are your cup of tea, this 3,000 square foot, pool equipped oasis is probably for you. The home definitely leans to the modern side with its Doric pillars, light interior, and angular floor plan. While mid-century inspiration is obvious here, some architectural decisions feel out-of-line with the practical, efficient methods of classic mid-century modern designers. Nevertheless, this home offers a unique experience in an amazing location.

Being in South Palm Springs, you’ll be surrounded by mid-century icons. Go for a walk around town and you’ll likely spot the work of masters like Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and William Krisel, whose Alexander tract of mid-century homes is just steps away. Suitable for 10 guests, the modern residence holds four bedrooms and three and a half baths. One of the larger rentals on our list, it would make the perfect hub for a multi-family adventure in California’s Coachella Valley.

Why people love it:
Both private and communal · Unbeatable location · So much light · The price is right

If you’re travelling to Seattle, why not stay in a work of mid-century architecture? Unbelievably cute, this Airbnb offers a glimpse into the practical but beautiful designs brought about by the need for affordable housing by the average American family. The subtle pitched roof and carport are great examples of elements that create a cohesion and completeness in mid-century homes. It’s amazing that a home likely around 60 years old can feel so ageless.

Best suited for a single family of four total guests, the rental has two bedrooms and one bath. A short walk to the Alaska Junction, look for the West Seattle Farmers Market and you’ll find a myriad of restaurants and activities. To the West, check out Me-Kwa-Mooks Park for amazing views of the sound.

Our goal here at Mid Mod Mango is to give advice about how you can introduce tenants of mid-century modern design into your home without being a snob, purist, or high-roller. While you might need a fair amount of dough to replicate what’s been done here, you could do well to at least take some notes; we think they’ve done an excellent job.

Though the renovation has likely removed a lot of the small original details, they’ve been supplemented by beautifully selected elements and furnishings. Typically when you see the addition of new appliances, plumbing, and electronics they stand out. Here, it’s been done in a way that feels guided by the original creator and helps us imagine what the great designers would do today with modern technology at their disposal.

The homes three bedrooms and three and half baths are made to accommodate six guests. Tons of high-end amenities have been added to ensure you have an up-to-date experience. You’ll be a short walk away from the village hub featuring parks, a Saturday Farmer’s Market, watersports, concerts, restaurants, and boutiques. If you do end of booking the home, please take some exterior photos. We’re dying to see!

P.S. Did you see that monolith of a fireplace?

Why people love it:
Iconic design & yoga · Great outdoor space · No cut corners · Beautiful neighborhood

Another lovely style-mashup, we think of this home as mid-century meets eclectic modern. Exposed wood beams will always have a place in our hearts, and the thoughtful addition of greenery to the rooms is so welcome. The blending of styles and equilibrium seen here is very relevant to mid mod methodology. Every room feels artistic and liveable. We’re taking cues.

Ideal for six guests, this Airbnb features four bedrooms and two and a half baths. If you bump into your rent-mates too much, try relaxing out on the incredible and spacious deck. There are plenty of parks nearby and the host recommends checking out the Old Mill District, floating the river, or taking a trip downtown to enjoy great restaurants or a local festival.

Why people love it:
Modern but warm · Nice back yard · Tons of space · Perfect for kids

One of a dozen homes in the aptly named 1.7 Ocean development (1.7 miles off the California coast), this carefully restored bungalow is totally mid mod cool but with all of the updates you’d expect in a new home. 1.7 Ocean was developed by Costa Mesa’s boutique real estate development company bettershelter. The company’s building style is “rooted in Southern California design tenets and sustainable construction methods” which lands them with good marks from us!

The bettershelter designed interior is excellently done with unique, period-inspired furniture and a ton of intriguing artwork. They are known for their high-end construction practices, and the attention to detail is obvious. The beachy antique style is really working here.

Listed as ideal for six guests, the quaint bungalow has two bedrooms and one bath. Take a stroll through the tiny neighborhood or venture over Triangle Square where you’ll find shops, dining, and a movie theater. As we mentioned earlier, you’ll be just 1.7 miles from the beach, so that’s always an option!
