Breath-taking. That’s truly the only way to describe this masterpiece of Beverly “David” Thorne. Thorne, who passed away in December of 2017, was the last living member of the Case Study Houses architects. Sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, the Case Study Houses were prototype homes designed to be inexpensive and efficient in response to the housing boom caused by the end of World War II. Thorne typically experimented with steel beams, positioning houses on steep hills or spanning rough terrain. This Airbnb rental is a perfect example of his creative and technical genius.
California’s San Francisco Bay rests quaintly on the horizon when looking out from the 1,200 square foot deck of this floating mid-century gem. The house spans a creek, which sends rushing water directly beneath the living area when it rains. The mature foliage surrounding the steel, glass, and wood structure provides privacy for the floor-to-ceiling windows. Inside, you’ll find modern amenities mixed with original and pristine furnishings that create a homey feeling.
Ideally accommodating eight guests, the Thorne house has four bedrooms and two baths. The area is filled with shopping, food, and entertainment, and provides easy access to further destinations with BART. One thing to note is the duration of stay required by the host, which is written out on the Airbnb listing.
Why people love it:
Very serene and comforting · Cozy, comfortable, and beautiful · Views of the Golden Gate Bridge · Accommodating host

Mid Mod Beach Pad
Del Mar, California
$179 per night*
2 Guests
1 Bedrooms
1 Baths
Entire House
In an effort to have something for everyone, we bring you this awesome little getaway that can best be described as spunky. A guest house to an equally awesome main house, this Airbnb has some serious mid mod flair going for it. Yes, there is a lot going on, but we can all appreciate getting a little wild in this ‘Nano-House’.
Everything about this pad is crisp, both inside and out. The yard is well manicured, and the spaces are laid out beautifully. It’s listed as being best for two guests with its one bed, one bath setup. The host speaks of an easy walk to the beach, close proximity to a golf course, and a parking pass to Torrey Pines State Park.
While it may be more ‘mod’ than ‘mid’, we can still appreciate the effort! Also, as a bonus, a keen eye is kept on sustainability in many aspects of the house, i.e. all electricity is provided through Solar. Awesome!

Mid-Century Modern Alexander Home
Palm Springs, California
$249 per night*
6 Guests
3 Bedrooms
2 Baths
Entire House
A part of the Alexander tract containing over 2,000 of his creations, this lovely mid-century house was designed by William Krisel and built by the Alexander Construction Company. Krisel, the architect behind the butterfly-roof design, preferred this type of work in which he paired with developers to work on large scale projects with a huge volume of homes. He always touted “buildability and livability” as his key tenants, and didn’t believe that style belonged in his work. William Krisel passed away in June of 2017 at the age of 92.
This particular home has been updated to modern standards while trying to maintain the sensibility of Krisel’s original work. Wonderful open spaces exist both inside and out on this private plot. The spaces are bright and energetic, but in a mature way. This Alexander home is most definitely a piece of mid-century history, and would make an excellent spot for a family trip.
The home is ideal for six guests, having three bedrooms and two baths and is a short drive from the Palm Springs International Airport and Art Museum.
Why people love it:
Perfect location – Perfect amenities · Great for a large group · The quintessential Palm Springs experience · Amazing pool

2,338 square feet of mid-century architecture makes this home a great choice for a group rental. The tall ceilings, exposed beams, and glass dividers featured in this house are great examples of the ingenuity and artistic touch that is inseparable from iconic mid-century design. Some furnishing choices leave a little to be desired, but overall, it’s a great find.
The size of the house and amenities make it a good choice for families. Six is the suggested number of guests, as the house boasts three bedrooms and two baths. Sequoia Park Zoo is just a few minutes away, and it’s just off the California coast.
Why people love it:

The Glass House
Portland, Oregon
$225 per night*

3 Bedrooms
2.5 Baths
Entire House
An amazing price for a true gem of mid-century architecture. Looking just at the front of the house, you can appreciate the geometric genius of mid-century design. Though the structure consists only of straight lines, it doesn’t clash with the glorious nature that surrounds it; the two come together to create a scene more beautiful than its parts alone. With two stories of glass windows, the intent to use nature as an interior design element is obvious.
Inside we find a lovingly updated space. We’d all appreciate a home filled with nothing but period-correct furnishings, but it’s understood that people are meant to live in and rent this home. With that in mind, the choices made during renovation feel on-point. A lot of the charm that usually gets smothered by remodeling has persisted in this house, from the gorgeous kitchen to that preciously preserved entry space. It’s effortlessly quaint and totally liveable.
Ideal for six guests, the house contains three bedrooms and two and a half baths. Take a trip to some of the amazing hiking destinations nearby, head downtown, or drive out to wine country. Don’t worry though; we won’t judge if you decide to stay on the property for the duration of your stay! We would!
Why people love it:
Beautiful, stylish, and spacious · Perfect layout · Awesome for day-trips · Gracious hosts

For vacations involving as many as ten guests, it’s nice to have a space that feels accommodating. Mid-century Modern on the Golf Course
Eugene, Oregon
$250 per night*
4 Guests
2 Bedrooms
2 Baths
Entire House
One of our favorite aspects of mid-century architecture is its interaction and integration with the landscape around it. Tiered concrete patios flanked by flora create amazing outdoor environments that help this house blend in with nature and become less visually abrupt. Wood-slatted decking on the golf course side continues this motif not often seen today.
Metal and glass combine to provide gorgeous views of the fairways and precious light throughout the exquisite layout of the home. The furnishings feel at home here, offering a sense of comfort, but also modernity. On a cloudy day, you’d feel at home curling up with a book in one of the softly lit corners of this intimate getaway.
The home accommodates four guests with its two bedrooms and two baths. Nested beside the Laurelwood Golf Course, tee off for a morning on the greens or head to one of the many Eugene destinations: beautiful parks, tons of museums, and delicious dining.
Why people love it:
Very spacious · Beautiful and convenient location · Serene outdoor space

Mid-Century Poolside Getaway
Yucca Valley, California
$150 per night*
4 Guests
1 Bedrooms
1.5 Baths
Entire House
Sitting happily in Yucca Valley, surrounded by cacti and Joshua trees, is a house with Southern California mid-century written all over it. The pitched-roof ranch feels like it was built to be a vacation getaway, especially since it’s acquired a pool just steps away from the home. Concrete floor and cinder-block walls might sound like a prison, but when paired with a beam-supported roof and chic furnishings, we think you’ll feel trapped in paradise.
There’s a great deal of character to the property at large that makes it such a unique spot. Imagine how amazing it would be catching rays out by that pool in the afternoon and hanging out by the fireplace in the evenings. With room for you and three of your guests, it’s an intimate place to relax and de-stress. Take a few trips out to Joshua Tree National Park and see some of the amazing natural wonders around the area. We doubt you’ll be disappointed.
Why people love it:
Totally relaxing · Amazing to explore · Just divine · Nearby shops, bars, and dining

Everything about this place is just fascinating.
2.5 acres of land gives you plenty of space for games and relaxation, even with a large group. The host suggests taking the drive through the vineyards of the Edna Valley to downtown San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly.
